How to Make a Square Face Avatar: A Step-by-Step Guide

A square face avatar looks simple, and that is exactly why it works. A handful of well-chosen parts can say more about you than a detailed portrait. This guide walks through the process our illustrators use when they build a new preset in the Raveelo square face generator.
1. Start with the silhouette
At the size most people will see your avatar, 32 to 64 pixels in a chat sidebar, details disappear first and outlines survive. That is why we always begin with the parts that change the outline: Hair, Side hair and Hats.
Open the Hair tab and click through the options with the default face. Notice how Spiky, Quiff and Space buns each create a completely different shape. Pair them with Side hair: Bob and Long straight frame the face, while Short sides keep it compact.
2. Choose a skin tone and hair color
Skin tones in the Skin tab range from light to deep, plus a few playful non-human colors for mascots and personas. Hair color is shared between the fringe and the side hair so they always match.
If you want a realistic look, keep hair darker than skin. For a sticker-style look, go bold: pink, periwinkle or mint hair against a sunny background reads beautifully at small sizes.
3. Give the face an expression
The Eyes, Brows and Mouth tabs are where personality lives. A tiny change, like switching Dots eyes to Happy arcs, turns a neutral avatar into a cheerful one.
- Friendly: Shiny eyes, Arched brows, Smile mouth, Blush cheeks.
- Cool: Determined eyes, Flat brows, Smirk mouth.
- Chaotic: Dizzy eyes, Worried brows, Tongue out.
- Sleepy: Sleepy eyes, no brows, Tiny mouth, a coffee-colored background.
4. Add one signature accessory
Resist the urge to stack everything. One strong accessory, round glasses, a beanie, cat ears or headphones, makes an avatar memorable. Two can work if they sit in different areas, for example glasses plus a scarf.
5. Pick a background that pops
The background is the largest area of color in your avatar. Choose one that contrasts with your hair and clothes. Grid and Dots add texture without noise, Sunburst adds energy, and Transparent is perfect when you want to place the avatar on your own designs.
6. Export and share
Download a 512 px PNG for profile pictures on most platforms. If you need print quality or streaming overlays, HD PNG up to 2048 px and SVG are available with the Creator Pack or Pro. Finally, use Copy share link so friends can open your exact avatar and remix it.
